PORTLAND- The Jacksonville Sharks (2-3) beat the Maine Mammoths (1-3) 48-31 to make it one game short of going .500 in the 2018 season. This is also the first time the Sharks faced the Mammoths, which means the Sharks lead the series 1-0 against the Mammoths.
Sharks Quarterback Adrian McPherson started for the second week in a row for the Sharks, this time, playing the full game. He was 22-of-31 for 219 yards, two touchdowns, and no interceptions. Fullback Derrick Ross also had one of his best games of the season, having nine rushes for 19 yards and three touchdowns, as well as one reception for nine yards. Wide Receiver Tom Gilson had eight receptions for 117 yards and one touchdown. Kendal Thompkins made his Sharks debut against the Mammoths and had seven catches for 46 yards. Chris Gilchrist made four catches for 30 yards and one touchdown. Antonio Vaughan had two receptions for 12 yards. Last, but surely not least, Offensive Lineman/Tight End Glenn Haisley had one catch for six yards and one touchdown.
To start the game, the Sharks made sure to wear out the Mammoths defense by keeping the ball for the first eight minutes of the game. After coming up short on the first drive, the Sharks started the game with no points, but held the Mammoths to no points as well. Both teams were still trying to get things going as the first quarter ended 0-0.
The Sharks looked like the dominant force in the second half, quickly scoring as Ross rushed to the left for a two yard touchdown. The Sharks defense made sure to keep the Mammoths offense off the field, only allowing a field goal to make the score 6-3 with the Sharks on top. After this, the Sharks offense got things going as well as the Sharks defense. McPherson threw his first touchdown pass to Glenn Haisley, which is also Haisley’s first touchdown of the season. To prove that the Sharks got things going on defense, Defensive Back Tyree Robinson came up with an interception that changed the momentum for the rest of the game. The offense of course took advantage of that as McPherson found Tom Gilson in the end zone for a one-handed touchdown. Defensive Back Marvin Ross returned a field goal for a 57-yard touchdown, which would put the score at 26-3 with the Sharks on top at halftime.
The second half kicked off to a great start for Maine, as Quarterback Jonathan Bane for the Mammoths connected on more passes than he did in the entire first half combined. Bane ended up throwing one interception and had one fumble, but Wide Receiver Derrick Macon recovered it to allow the Mammoths to keep the ball. The first drive of the second half for the Mammoths ended in a touchdown, but the Sharks would soon quiet the Mammoths down as Gilchrist found the end zone on the Sharks opening drive of the half. On a kickoff later in the third quarter, the Sharks fumbled the ball and the Mammoths recovered at the Jacksonville 20 yard line. The Mammoths would not score any points on the turnover. The third quarter ended with a 32-17 score with Jacksonville on top.
At this point, the Sharks need to finish, which they did exactly that. After getting the ball from the Mammoths empty drive, the Sharks milked the clock, scored a few more times, and ended the game 48-31.
