Sharks Acquire Former NFL Defensive Back Joel Ross

JACKSONVILLE – The 2019 National Arena League Champion Jacksonville Sharks have announced today that they have acquired Defensive Back Joel Ross through a trade with the Carolina Cobras. The Cobras will receive a future player consideration. Ross enters his fifth season of professional football and his first season of arena football. 

Ross (5’10, 190) last played for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the Canadian Football League (CFL). During his time with the Tiger-Cats, he played in three games during 2018 combining for three tackles and one interception that was returned for a TD. In 2017, Ross was signed with the Calgary Stampeders and played in one preseason game where he had two tackles and one interception. 

Prior to the CFL, Ross had a stint in the NFL starting the 2015 preseason with the Chicago Bears but finished the preseason with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers where he made the team’s regular-season roster as a member of the Bucs practice squad. In 2014, Ross got his career start as an undrafted free-agent signing with the Dallas Cowboys where he competed in the team’s training camp and preseason before being released. 

During his college career Ross played as a three-year starter for Appalachian State where he had a career total of 114 tackles, nine passes defended, three interceptions, and one sack. Ross is a native of Damascus, MD and graduated from Damascus High School.
