10/04/2012 2:37 PM - JACKSONVILLE – The 2012 South Division Champion Jacksonville Sharks announced Thursday that the team and Head Coach Les Moss have agreed to terms on a two-year contract that will keep Moss in his current role through the 2014 season. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
“Coach Moss is a champion and we are excited to have him lead our team for the next two seasons,” Sharks Managing Partner Jeff Bouchy said. “He is a tremendous recruiter and developer of talent, and his on-field results speak for themselves.”
At the helm of the team since its inaugural season, Moss has compiled a 40-18 overall record that includes a 36-16 regular-season mark and four wins in six playoff contests. Under Moss’ direction, the Sharks have captured a South Division title in each of the franchise’s first three seasons, the first team in league history to accomplish that feat.
“I want to thank the Arena Football League and the entire Sharks organization for the opportunity they have given me,” Moss said. “We came close to accomplishing our goal of winning the championship last season. Our goals never change – each year our goal is to win the ArenaBowl, and I’m excited about what’s in store for us next season and beyond. There’s no place I’d rather coach, and I’ll be here as long as they’ll have me.”
In addition, the Sharks’ four playoff victories in the last three years stand as the second-highest total among all AFL teams in that span. Moss has also put together an 11-4 all-time record against the in-state rival Orlando Predators and Tampa Bay Storm, two of the most storied franchises in the league.
Moss led Jacksonville to a 12-4 record and a playoff appearance during the team’s inaugural 2010 season, earning a selection as the 2010 AFL Coach of the Year in the process.
The following year, Moss and the Sharks rattled off an AFL-record 13 consecutive wins during the 2011 regular season. Finishing the season at 14-4 and as the top seed in the American Conference, the Sharks avenged their 2010 playoff loss with a first-round victory over the rival Orlando Predators. The team continued on to capture its first American Conference Championship by defeating the division rival Georgia Force. Just four days after the Conference Championship game, Moss led the Sharks to a dramatic 73-70 win over the Arizona Rattlers in ArenaBowl XXIV.
In 2012, Jacksonville followed its championship with yet another division title. The team ended the season with four wins in its last five regular-season games to finish at 10-8, at the top of a hotly contested South Division. The Sharks won a postseason game for a third consecutive season, defeating Georgia by a 58-56 count before falling to the Philadelphia Soul in the American Conference Championship.
Though Moss’ tenure with the Sharks is his first as an AFL head coach, he carries well over 20 years of experience coaching in the professional ranks. Moss’ teams have reached the postseason every year since 1992, a remarkable string of 21 straight playoff berths. After beginning his AFL career as an assistant with the Chicago Bruisers in 1998, Moss then spent time with the Detroit Drive and Orlando Predators, working for many years under his father, Perry. Moss also coached with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers of af2 before heading to Jacksonville.
A native of Poca, West Virginia, Moss attended the University of Central Florida. During the offseason, he resides in DeBary, Florida with his wife Cindy and their son Jake.
