JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville Sharks announced Tuesday that veteran defensive back Chris Smith has been assigned to the team’s roster. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The 27-year-old Smith (5’10”, 180) heads to Jacksonville after spending the first two seasons of his Arena Football League career with the Tampa Bay Storm. In 2014, Smith played in six games with the Storm before signing with the Canadian Football League’s Montreal Alouettes. He made a significant impact in those six contests, finishing the season with a team-high total of six interceptions. He also totaled 27.5 tackles and six pass breakups, and both forced and recovered a fumble.

Smith was a fixture in the Storm’s lineup as an AFL rookie in 2013, starting 16 games that season. He led Tampa Bay with 70.5 tackles and eight interceptions, and finished second among all Storm defenders with 11 pass breakups. Smith intercepted a pass in four of Tampa Bay’s first six games that season, and later notched a two-pick performance in a mid-season game against the San Jose SaberCats.

In addition to his time in the CFL during the 2014 season, Smith also logged a stint with the National Football League’s St. Louis Rams, signing with the team as an undrafted free agent following the 2011 NFL Draft. In limited action with the Storm during the 2011 season, Smith recorded a total of three tackles.

Prior to the start of his professional career, Smith played at Northern Illinois University after transferring from Highland Community College. Smith started 25 of the 26 games in which he played with the Huskies, and was tabbed as a first-team All Mid-American Conference selection as a senior in 2010.

A native of Bradenton, Florida, Smith attended Palmetto High School.

The Sharks also announced Tuesday that the team has placed defensive lineman LaKendrick Ross on recallable reassignment. Following the transactions, the Jacksonville roster remains at the League maximum of 24 active players.
