Sharks Can’t Overcome Slow Start In Green Bay
GREEN BAY, WI.- The Jacksonville Sharks (9-2) came up short on the road against the playoff bound Green Bay Blizzard (10-2). The second quarter ultimately decided the game. Green Bay exploded for 33 points, exploiting defensive lapses and turning a tight contest into a steep uphill battle for the visitors. While Jacksonville found its footing in the second half and fought to the very end, the early damage proved too severe to overcome on the road.
Down 41-23 at halftime the Sharks refused to roll over. Opening the 3rd quarter with a big defenseman stop. The Sharks kept battling during the final two quarters, relying on a heavy dose of RB Jimmie Robinson Jr. to ignite the offense. Robinson sliced through the Blizzard front for a crucial score, followed by a physical touchdown run by QB Sammy Edwards that gave Jacksonville signs of life. A late, contested touchdown catch by WR Redd Douglas brought the Sharks within striking distance in the fourth quarter. However, the furious rally was simply a case of too little, too late. Forced to play against both the Blizzard and the clock, Jacksonville ran out of possessions as Green Bay iced the 54-45 victory.
The Sharks led in virtually every major statistical category except the one that matters most, scoring. The offense moved the chains all night, racking up more total yards than the Blizzard. Jacksonville's offensive line created some good holes for the running game while the defense clamped down to limit Green Bay's overall yardage. But stats don't win games and Green Bay took advantage of the opportunities they created. The Sharks proved they could move the ball but ultimately, it wasn't a lack of production that cost them, but not making big plays when it mattered. The Sharks had a couple chances to score but couldn't find the end zone resulting in two field goal attempts and only 3 points. Giving momentum back to the Blizzard who capitalized on their opportunities, (which included a couple great bounces), during that explosive second quarter. The Sharks lost their chance to extend their 1st place lead but remain in good position in the Eastern Conference. This matchup serves as a reminder that winning is a continuous grind, even for the league's best teams. The Sharks will get a chance for revenge when Green Bay travels to Jacksonville on Sunday, July 26th
Up next the Sharks return to Florida next Sunday to take on in-state rivals the Orlando Pirates. Fan bus tickets are available for more information go to jaxsharks.com or call 904-621-0700.
