Jacksonville, Fla-Saturdays game at Sea Best Field featured the first ever match-up between the red hot Jacksonville Sharks and the revamped Milwaukee Mustangs. The game was the first on Sea Best Field in over four weeks. In their absence from Sea Best Field, the Sharks took their winning streak on the road, winning three straight games against division opponents Georgia, New Orleans and Orlando. The Sharks looked to win their 12th straight game when they returned home, to play against the Milwaukee Mustangs.
The Jacksonville defense began the game with a tough fought stop on fourth down that gave the offense possession at mid-field to begin their opening drive. The offense capitalized on the very first play with a 25 yard touchdown pass from Aaron Garcia to Jomo Wilson to put the Sharks on top 6-0. The Sharks defense remained in control on the next series forcing Milwaukee to attempt a long field goal that resulted in Jacksonvilles possession at the 5 yard line. The Mustangs defense proved why they ranked number one in the league when they sacked Garcia for just the 5th time this season. The sack also forced a fumble which was returned by Milwaukee Defensive Lineman, Dwayne Lefall, which gave the Mustangs an early lead 7-6.
The Sharks offense wasted no time at the beginning of the second quarter, scoring on the first play when Aaron Garcia hooked up with Jeff Hughley for a 7 yard touchdown pass. Milwaukees Mykel Benson pounded the ball in from the two yard line in the next series to put the Mustangs back ahead of the Sharks 13-14. Jamarko Simmons capped of the Sharks next drive, scoring on a 1 yard rush. The Jacksonville defense came up with a huge stop on fourth down at the one minute mark of the first half. A penalty on a Jacksonville onside kick gave Milwaukee possession on the Jacksonville 5 yard line. Mykel Benson ran the ball in for his second rushing touchdown of the night. Kelvin Rodgers intercepted Aaron Garcias pass intended for Jomo Wilson, to give Milwaukee the last shot at the end zone in the first half. Jacksonville battled off the Mustangs at the end of the quarter with a Micheaux Robinson interception, which left the score 27-20 at the end of the half. The third quarter opened with a drawn out Jacksonville drive that resulted in a turnover on downs and Milwaukee gaining possession on their own 5 yard line. RJ Archer completed the first touchdown pass of the quarter to Dwayne Eley Jr to tie the game at 27. Jeff Hughley caught his second receiving touchdown of the night, when he brought down a 28 yard pass from Garcia. The Mustangs responded right back when Kelvin Rodgers returned the kickoff 58 yards, for touchdown which tied the game at 34 to end the quarter.
Jomo Wilson struck first in the fourth quarter with his third receiving touchdown of the night. Laroche Jackson stepped up for the Jacksonville defense on the next series, when he intercepted RJ Archer and returned the ball 23 yards for a touchdown, which put the Sharks ahead by two scores. Milwaukee had to grind out the next series, eventually scoring after three consecutive short yard rushes by Mustangs Fullback Mykel Benson. Jamarko Simmons showed his elevation, making a leaping catch in the end-zone for his second touchdown of the night. An onside kick recovery by Jacksonville gave them excellent field position, which Jeff Huhgley used when he brought down his third receiving touchdown of the evening to virtually seal the game up for the Sharks.
Saturdays victory gave the Sharks 12 consecutive victories which ties the all-time record for most consecutive wins in a season. The Sharks fought their way past the number one defense in the league by putting up 15 more points than the Mustangs have allowed per game this season. Multiple Sharks had to step up to fill in for the multiple injuries. The Sharks will seek the AFL record 13th consecutive victory, on Saturday, June 25th, when they host their in-state rivals, the Tampa Bay Storm. The Storm are coming off of an impressive victory of the Orlando Predators in the War on I-4. A victory over Tampa Bay in the next game will be a perfect sweep in the South Division for the Jacksonville Sharks.
